What is Fit Testing?
Fit testing is a process used to ensure that a respirator provides the user with proper protection while remaining comfortable to wear. A properly fitted respirator creates a secure seal that helps prevent harmful contaminants from entering the mask and being inhaled by the wearer.
Employers are responsible for ensuring that employees who are required to wear personal protective respiratory equipment—whether half-face or full-face respirators—receive professional fit testing. The purpose of a Respiratory Fit Test (FIT) is to verify that the respirator fits correctly and provides an effective seal for maximum safety and protection.
There are two primary types of respirator fit testing:
- Qualitative Respirator Fit Test (QLFT) – A pass/fail test that relies on the wearer’s sensory response to detect leakage.
- Quantitative Respirator Fit Test (QNFT) – A more advanced test that uses specialized equipment to measure the exact amount of leakage into the respirator.
Why Get Fit Tested?
